What to Do!
-
Day Trip to Napa
Napa is the quintessential getaway from San Francisco, as it is one of the most beautiful wine countries in the world. There are a ton of different wineries that you can visit, but I recommend these: St. Supery, Hall Wines, Castello di Amorsa, Joseph Phelps, and Spottswoode. I have had wonderful tasting experiences at all of these vineyards! You can expect tastings to be $50 - $90 per person and 2 - 3 a day is the perfect amount, in my opinion
-
Ocean Beach
Ocean Beach is a beloved location for many locals, if you go early in the morning you will likely catch a bunch of surfers! And if you are a surfer (which I sadly am not), it is a wonderful spot to go and easily accessible from many locations in the city. I love to go for a walk by the beach on the weekends and its very dog friendly!
-
Palace of Fine Arts
The Palace of Fine Arts is a great spot for an afternoon stroll or a picnic. The architecture is stunning and features a Greek/Roman style rotunda with a massive dome and a colonnade of Corinthian columns. On the weekends, you will find locals and tourists alike. It is a quick walk from Crissy Field Beach and Fort Mason, other beautiful spots in the area to visit
-
Go Hiking!
The bay area is known for its stunning hiking trails that can be found all around the city. While I do no think that you can go wrong with any of the trails, my favorite has to be in Pacifica (when it is a sunny day of course). The hike gives you gorgeous views of the entire coastline from north to south - it is one of the best views of the coastline you can find! The name of the trail is Old Colma loop and it s a moderate, 5 mi like with ~1000 ft of elevation
-
Bernal Heights Park
If you happen to be in the area, I love spending an afternoon at Bernal heights park. My partner and I live in the mission and love taking afternoon walks on the weekend to Bernal Heights park, which has a gorgeous view of the city - a very similar view of the city as the one you get from Twin Peaks but with less people! If you catch it on a clear day, you may be able to see all the way to Oakland if you are lucky
-
Day Trip to Black Sands Beach
Not going to lie, part of me really wants to gatekeep this location BUT I am not. My favorite beach in the city is Black Sands Beach, which is just a quick drive from the Marina across the Golden Gate Bridge. It is a fabulous location for a warm summer day and typically has very few people there
-
Mission Dolores Park
I may be biased as a resident of the Mission but I LOVE Mission Dolores Park and I think it has one of the most beautiful views of the city that you will find. It is very dog friendly and on a warm sunny day, you will see ton of residents with their dogs, having a beautiful picnic. My favorite time of the ay to go is at sunset on a weekday, when it is typically less busy!
-
Fort Mason
As a local, my boyfriend and I adore the Fort Mason farmer’s market on Sunday morning and then going for a walk by Crissy field before heading back to the Mission. I have to say, it can be a bit chilly, this was photographed on a warm day but it can be quite chilly, so I would bring a jacket! Crissy field’s beach is very dog friendly, I love to take my parent’s dog here for a walk on the beach with a view of the Golden Gate!
-
SF MOMA
If you have been on a few of my pages, I am sure you have recognized that I truly enjoy a day at the museum and love to visit different art exhibits whenever I travel. While I am recommending the SF MOMA here, I would like to specify that it is not entirely my favorite contemporary art exhibit, it is a gorgeous museum. I also am a big fan of the happy hour at their cafe!
-
Window Shopping in the Mission
One of my favorite activities when friends visit from the south bay is to take them window shopping in my neighborhood. The Mission, specifically Valencia street, has a ton of fun boutique shops with unique clothing that is always fun to walk through. There are some mainstream brands as well like Everlane, Reformation, and Isalis, making it the perfect spot for a shopping day!
-
Golden Gate Bridge
It goes without saying that the Golden Gate Bridge is one of the most iconic locations to visit in San Francisco, and there are so many great ways to see it! If it is your first time to the city, I recommend walking across the bridge (weather permitting ofc), because it gives you stunning views of the bridge, Marin, and the city! Make sure to dress warmly (even in the summer), as it can be quite windy and a bit chilly!
-
Concert at Shoreline Ampitheater
The Shoreline Ampitheater is one of the best places to see concerts in the SF Bay Area, and it is particularly known for its summer country concerts. There are many options for viewing, the most affordable being the lawn, where people typically picnic with their friends, bringing dinner and drinks! You can also purchase seats closer to the stage if you prefer!
-
Farmer's Market
If you would like to feel like a local, the a weekend farmer’s market is the way to do it! You definitely do not need to go just to buy groceries, as many of the larger farmer’s markets have live music and food trucks where you can get breakfast! My favorite farmer’s market is the Fort Mason farmer’s market on Sunday mornings because it is SO big and there is really delicious breakfast options - I highly recommend the breakfast burrito spot, it hits every time :) If you are looking for a more quaint location, the Noe Valley farmer’s market is much smaller but has a real neighborhood vibe and there are tons of delicious brunch restaurants to visit afterwards :)
Where to Eat!
-
Tartine Manufactory
Tartine manufactory is one of the best bakeries in the entire bay area and it has been around for decades - my great grandmother would always get her pastries from here! My boyfriend and I are so lucky that our apartment is quite literally right across the street from one of Tartine’s locations, the Tartine Manufactory. I would be lying if I did not eat here once a week! If you are a fan of avocado toast, I would recommend getting it here! One of the best avocado toasts I’ve ever had!
-
Sightglass
Sightglass is a boutique coffee chain that you will find all throughout the city, and I am so lucky that there is one right by where I live! I absolutely love their vanilla paste latte - it is unlike any other vanilla latte that I’ve had - the flavor is so unique yet so subtle. If you are a fan of vanilla, I highly recommend you try it.
-
Piccino
I absolutely love Italian food - so very much, and every time I go to this restaurant, I find that it consistently has the BEST PASTA that I have ever had. AND, my Italian boyfriend is obsessed with the pasta. I recommend getting a couple of dishes to share with whoever you go with so that you can try a bunch of the different items on the menu!
-
Stonehill Matcha
The best matcha that i have ever had was from Stonehill matcha - they have a ton of different flavors (my favorite is the lavendar). They also have a delicious lunch menu full of traditional Japanese food. It is really refreshing coming from lots of the cafés that have overly sweetened drinks - you will definitely not find that here. Bring a friend for an afternoon drink :)
-
The Handroll Project
The Handroll Project is a newer restaurant in the Mission that has absolutely delicious handrolls - it is honestly some of the best sushi that I have ever had in my life. All of the seating is bar-style, and you get to watch your handrolls be prepared right in front of you! If you are interested, I recommend booking in advance, as reservations are required and spots fill up QUICKLY!
-
Penny Roma
Penny Roma is one of my favorite Italian spots in all of San Francisco, and it is located in the Mission District. You can go for lunch or dinner, both have similar menus! My favorite dish is the cacio e pepe, though I recommend you sharing dishes with others in your party so that you can try a bunch of the different pastas, as they are all so unique and delicious! As with the Handroll Project, reservations can be difficult to get, so make sure to book in advance!
-
Gott's Roadside
Gott’s is a small bay area chain restaurant that is known for their burgers! There are a couple locations throughout the Bay Area including by Oracle Arena, Palo Alto, and Napa. While my boyfriend loves the burger, I am a big fan of the ahi tuna tacos, the aioli is delicious! I also prefer their sweet potato fries to the regular, but they are both delicious! You really cannot go wrong :)
-
Epic Steak
Epic Steak is my boyfriend and I’s “occasion dinner,” as it is a really nice and rather expensive steakhouse by the water. It is definitely worth the splurge though! While I like steak, it is not always my favorite meal and I will sometimes branch out so I have some non-steak recommendations! The lobster pasta is my favorite non-steak option at this restaurant it is so freaking good! Make sure to get the desert too!
